EMPLOYER ADVICE

Create a Better First Day for Temporary Employees

Create an arrival message that a new employee can follow without calling for directions.

Michigan workforce guide: workplace context

HIRED IN MICHIGAN EDITORIAL • PRACTICAL GUIDE • OCTOBER 18, 2026

Remove arrival uncertainty

Send the street address, parking instructions, entrance, start time, and the name of the person who will meet the employee. Explain any items the employee should bring and any equipment the company provides. A worksite with multiple entrances needs more detail than a building name alone.

Plan an introduction to the actual job

Reserve time for orientation, task demonstrations, questions, and any required workplace training. Identify the person who can stop and explain a task when the supervisor is unavailable. Check in before the end of the shift to find out whether directions were clear and whether the employee knows tomorrow’s schedule.

A practical detail to check

Check the arrival instructions from the employee’s point of view. Would someone new know where to stand, whom to ask for, and what time to arrive? Add a backup contact when the normal greeter may be away from the entrance or already supervising a shift.

Put the advice into practice

Choose one current role or recruiting activity to use as a pilot. Review the details with the person who owns the work, and confirm that the written information reflects the actual opportunity. Keep a dated note of the changes so your team can distinguish the current version from an older message or document.

After the next candidate interaction, ask whether the information helped move the process forward. Look for a specific issue you can correct, rather than assuming one response proves the whole approach works. Share the correction with everyone using the materials. Consistent execution matters as much as a carefully prepared first draft.

Before you move on, write down your next action in one sentence: create an arrival message that a new employee can follow without calling for directions. Give that action a realistic time in your schedule and keep any unanswered questions beside it. Review those questions when you receive new information instead of treating an assumption as a confirmed detail.
